Tindivanam K Ramamurthy, Former Chairman of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, Dies Aged 86 of Illness
Chennai, August 8: Former Tamil Nadu congressional committee chairman Tindivanam K Ramamurthy died here on Sunday and leaders including chief minister MP Stalin have regretted his death. He was 86 years old and died of illness. Ramamurthy had held various positions within the party, including that of secretary of state, secretary general and had led the Tamil Nadu congressional unit as chairman, according to a party statement.
Former MPP and MP for Rajya Sabha between 1984 and 1990, he was also previously the leader of the opposition in the now defunct Legislative Council and worked hard for the growth of the Congress party, said TNCC Chairman KS Alagiri.
Supporting Ramamurthy’s death and expressing his sorrow, Alagiri said he had raised his voice for the people’s problems in the assembly and worked to protect the interests of the backward classes.
“The death of Tindivanam Ramamurthy is an irreparable loss and I offer my condolences and to his family and friends,” Alagiri said. Chief Minister Stalin, who laid a wreath on the body at the former TNCC chief’s residence here, said Ramamurthy had died of illness and was distressed to learn more.
Hailing Ramamurthy as a Congress veteran in the national mainstream who worked closely with leaders like K Kamaraj, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, Stalin said he had fought for the welfare and rights of the Tamil Nadu and had made the state famous.
Senior AIADMK leaders O Panneerselvam and K Palaniswami recalled in a statement that Ramamurthy was working in a spirit of friendship when their party aligned with Congress years ago and praised the work of the former TNCC chief for the welfare of the people.
The leader of the Legislative Party of Congress K Selvaperunthagai, the founding leader of Pattali Makkal Katchi S Ramadoss, the leader of the Muslim League of the Indian Union KM Khader Mohideen, the leader of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam TTV Dhinakaran were others who have forgiven Ramamurthy’s death. All the leaders expressed their sympathy and condolences to the bereaved.
