The strong Congress, an important pillar of opposition unity: Jairam Ramesh
A strong Congress is an important pillar of opposition unity and its allies must understand that the party will not allow itself to be weakened, senior official Jairam Ramesh said on Monday.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, he said the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ had breathed new energy into the party organization and claimed the BJP was shaken by the response that he received among the people.
Ramesh said the yatra aims to strengthen the Congress, which is important for opposition unity.
“I am happy that after the Bharat Jodo Yatra everyone saw that the elephant woke up, the elephant is moving forward and all parties see what the Congress is doing,” he said. .
Noting that statements will continue to come from BJP and Congress allies, Ramesh said opposition unity will only be possible when Congress is strong.
”The unity of the opposition does not mean the weakening of Congress. Our allies must also understand that we will not allow ourselves to be weakened any further. We will strengthen ourselves. A strong Congress is an important pillar of opposition unity,” he said.
Bharat Jodo Yatra is not for opposition unity, it is for strengthening Congress, Ramesh said.
”If this results in the unity of the opposition, it is good and we welcome it. But our priority is to strengthen the party organization. To make it more efficient,” he said.
In five days of the ‘Kanyakumari’ yatra in Kashmir, a total of 102 kilometers will be covered by tonight, Ramesh said.
”I had said that the Bharat Jodo Yatra would not be a Mann Ki Baat but concerns of people. Little did I know that this would also become a concern for the BJP. They are shaken,’ the senior Congress official said, adding that the people’s response had made the BJP nervous.
”We don’t expect Cabinet ministers to tell the truth… I won’t stoop to their level. Won’t fall to the level of Home Secretary (Amit Shah) and some other ministers,’ he said in an apparent reference to Shah’s T-shirt beard to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Ramesh said with the yatra in its fifth day after traveling through Tamil Nadu and now in Kerala, there is “new enthusiasm and energy” in the party organisation.
”We wanted to rejuvenate our party. A new energy and enthusiasm in the party is visible. It’s a good start, the response from people is very good,” he said.
“There’s a lot of excitement in other states as well,” he added.
Responding to a question about attacks and counterattacks between the BJP and Congress, Ramesh said that the RSS and BJP were not ready for aggressive responses from Congress.
“If they’ll be aggressive. We will be doubly aggressive. But the Bharat Jodo Yatra is to unite people,” he said.
