The International Congress on Spa Tourism returns after an 11-year hiatus

The International Congress of Thermal Tourism (ICTT) returns in 2022 and takes place in Expourense in Spain, from September 27 to 29, 2022.

The event will mark the third edition of the congress, following the events of 1999 and 2011.

As in previous years, the event will take place in the historic spa town of Ourense known for its ancient hot springs.

Around 300 international delegates are expected and will hear from a dynamic line-up of speakers covering a range of topics. These will include:
• How to safeguard thermal heritage.
• Socio-economic benefits of thermal tourism and opportunities for tourism and development.
• Provide a sustainable, competitive and innovative model for other tourism sectors or products.
• How thermal heritage can be used to provide immersive spa and wellness experiences.

The congress is organized by the Galicia Region together with the municipality of Ourense and the European Association of Historic Spa Towns (EHTTA) – an affiliate member of the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization).

ICTT 2022 is held in conjunction with the annual industry event Termatalia, an international exhibition dedicated to spa tourism, health and wellness.

Held September 29-30, this year’s conference will mark Termatalia’s 20th anniversary.

Corporate Spa spoke to Manuel Baltar, president of the EHTTA and president of the province of Ourense (Galicia/Spain), about the upcoming events.

“In the wake of the pandemic, the world seems to be looking for exactly what spa towns can offer and we want to highlight the unique set of benefits that spa tourism can bring to visitors.”

Baltar says the ICTT will be underpinned by three broad themes: tourism, heritage and experience.

“The program is designed to give delegates an in-depth insight into the world of historic spa towns and spa tourism in general. It involves global speakers and a global audience to help delegates compare and learn best practices in spa tourism around the world as well as in Europe.

“With a launch date that coincides with World Tourism Day and the event’s connection with Termatalia, the ICTT in Ourense is definitely the place to be in September.”

After 2022, it is planned to make the ICTT a more regular event.

Registration for ICTT and Termatalia is handled by Expourense, which is the organization behind Termatalia. To learn more about registration, follow this link.

UNWTO Affiliate Members and EHTTA Members are offered special opportunities to exhibit at Termatalia, and an EHTTA Trade Show will allow members to exhibit and network.
