Tharoor endorses petition calling for ‘constructive reforms’ in Cong; meet Sonia Gandhi

Adding to the buzz about the possibility of his Congress president polls, Shashi Tharoor on Monday endorsed a petition from a group of young party members seeking “constructive reform” and met with AICC leader Sonia Gandhi , here.

The petition shared by Tharoor on Twitter called for reforms and a commitment from AICC presidential candidates to implement the Udaipur Declaration in full, if elected. The former Union Minister said it had been signed by more than 650 people so far.

”I salute this petition which is being circulated by a group of young @INCIndia members, seeking constructive reforms within the Party. It has already collected more than 650 signatures. I am happy to endorse it and move beyond,” Tharoor tweeted along with screenshots of the petition.

Shortly after approving the petition, Tharoor met with acting party leader Sonia Gandhi at her residence. He, however, did not reveal what happened at the meeting.

The meeting comes amid indications that Tharoor, who was part of the group of 23 leaders who wrote to Gandhi in 2020 demanding an organizational overhaul, could challenge the election of Congress president and file his candidacy.

The petition which Tharoor endorsed stated, “We are members of the Congress party with a desire to strengthen the party to reflect the hopes and aspirations of our nation.” The petition sets out some of the principles of the Udaipur Declaration which was made on May 15, 2022, after the party brainstorming session.

”We call on every candidate for the All India Congress Committee Chairman election to publicly pledge to involve party members from bloc committees up to CWC and implement the Udaipur Declaration in its entirety within the first 100 days of taking office. ”, the petition states.

In its statement, the Congress announced sweeping organizational reforms to prepare the party’s battle for the next round of Lok Sabha assembly and polls, emphasizing wider representation of the under-50s and applying “a person, position”. and “one family, one ticket” rules with runners.

Asked about the possibility of him running for president of Congress, Tharoor told the PTI earlier this month: “I just welcomed the fact that an election will be held. I believe it is very good for the party.” ”Of course, it is gratifying that this general declaration of democratic principle immediately led a large number of people across the country to welcome the prospect of my candidacy. But as I made it clear, I did not declare my candidacy,” said Tharoor.

”I hope that many will participate in order to give a wide choice to the members. So far, I have neither imposed nor excluded myself, ”said the former Union minister.

The nomination process for the election will take place from September 24 to 30. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is October 8 and the election, if necessary, will take place on October 17. The results will be known on October 19.
