Politics around killing of Karnataka activist escalates, Shivakumar calls for Eshwarappa to be sacked

Karnataka Congress Speaker DK Shivakumar has denied claims by BJP leader KS Eshwarappa that his statements on the national flag encouraged ‘Muslim morons’ to assassinate a Bajrang Dal activist in Shivamogga, Karnataka . Former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah demanded the resignation of Interior Minister Araga Jnanendra over the incident.

On Monday February 21, Karnataka Congress Speaker DK Shivakumar denied any connection to the murder of 23-year-old Bajrang Dal activist on Sunday and called for the dismissal of Minister Eshwarappa. He also dismissed any speculation that the murder was linked to the ongoing hijab row in Karnataka.

Responding to BJP leader KS Eshwarappa’s allegation of “encouraging Muslim morons” to assassinate Bajrang Dal activist with his tricolor statement, DK Shivakumar said: “He [Eshwarappa] doesn’t make sense. he has already violated the Indian flag code. A complaint must be filed against him and he must be fired. He brought shame to the country and the national flag,” Shivakumar added.

Karnataka Minister Eshwarappa on Monday alleged that Muslim thugs were involved in the murder of 23-year-old Bajrang Dal activist Harsha in Shivamogga district on Sunday night. He accused Congress’ DK Shivakumar of “provoking Muslim morons”.

Speaking on the alleged ‘provocation’, “Although he said some nonsense to the assembly, I never spoke about the issue. I didn’t provoke anyone. I don’t want to make it a political issue .”

Shivakumar also said, “He [the murder] has nothing to do with the hijab issue. It was the result of a personal enmity between two groups. The Minister of the Interior issued a statement on this subject. But the police must carry out a thorough investigation into the incident.”

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah demanded the resignation of Interior Minister Araga Jnanendra over the incident. He said: “The murder was committed in Shivamogga district, where Home Secretary Eshwarappa and Yediyurappa are from. Therefore, I demand the resignation of the Minister of the Interior.

“I condemn this murder. Congress believes in nonviolence. The culprits must be punished immediately,” he added.
