KAMPALA – Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga appealed to water professionals and public service organizations to improve water sanitation in urban and rural areas.

The President made the call as he officiated at the closing of the 20th International Congress and Exhibition of the African Water Association (AFWA) on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Kampala Serena Conference Center.

The congress under the theme “Innovating to accelerate access to water and sanitation for all in Africa” attracted water professionals from all over the continent.

Kadaga said sanitation has been relegated to the background and more attention given to access to water. She said questions should be asked regarding the management of sanitation water.
“How many cities in Africa have good, clean and accessible public toilets? How many schools and hospitals have appropriate waste management and water sanitation? Why do you still have scenarios of people constructing commercial buildings without toilets? “

She called on public service organizations to raise the issue of access to water and sanitation in a healthy way without neglecting either of the two. Kadaga said it will be possible if such congresses focus on such issues.

The president also urged water organizations to work hard to improve sanitation and access to water in rural areas.

The chairman of the board of directors of the national water cooperation, Dr Christopher Ebal, appreciated the chairman for his efforts to support water issues in parliament.
However, he asked her to continue supporting regulations on water sanitation, access and the environment.

“We have environmental degradation and water contamination issues that will greatly affect the water we harvest for use; we need more laws to deal with these problems, ”he said.
He cited some of the NWSC’s environmental protection achievements, such as using solar power at their pumping stations and supporting the formation of water and sanitation clubs in schools. to encourage water conservation.

AFWA President and NWSC Executive Director Dr Silver Mugisha said Congress had discussed key elements regarding access to water and sanitation and there was a promise to deliver. an improvement in this area.
He expressed his gratitude to the President for championing the ongoing campaign to plant 40 million trees.
