I Was Not Kidnapped – Chairman of the Osun CPA Congress Committee
… promises a transparent and seamless process
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Committee for the Osun District Convention, the Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, announced the arrival of Committee members to the state on Friday, just as he claimed the news of his kidnapping was a ruse.
Elegbeleye said the committee members had just arrived in the state on Friday, contrary to rumored innuendos that they had been in the state for days.
APC Congress Committee Chairman Ward, who revealed that none of the committee members were kidnapped or abducted by anyone, said they arrived late in Osun due to the logistics necessary to ensure the smooth running of the process.
He also pledged that the Committee would do everything possible to uphold transparency, accountability and fairness before, during and after Congress.
Elegbeleye said this while addressing the people at the Osun State Congress Committee Stakeholder Meeting on Neighborhood Congress held at Government House, Osogbo.
He said the committee will deploy the necessary mechanisms to organize a free and fair neighborhood convention in 332 wards across the state.
It was even then that Governor Adegboyega Oyetola stressed that the need to ensure that Congress was not used to create problems in the party informed the decision of the National Party Secretariat to advise states to seek a consensus between the different options.
He pledged adequate security before, during and after the whole process, noting that the state would do anything to ensure a credible process.
“Mine is to welcome you to our state and I’m glad you are all here. We have been waiting for you ever since. The congress is a means of electing the new leaders of the party and it must not generate a crisis and for the national leadership of the party to have asked us to adopt the consensus is to avoid resentment.
“I want our people to make sure we have a hard-core exercise. We have provided you with adequate security.
“The presence of all party actors here at this meeting shows that the party is strong and formidable,” he said.
The meeting brought together all of the state’s party leaders, including Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, three former deputy governors – Senator Iyiola Omisore, Prince Sooko Adewoyin and Ms Titi Laoye-Ponle – and the chairman of Osun, Senate Spokesman Timothy Owoeye, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, Members of the National Assembly and House Legislators of the State Assembly, among others.
Speaking further, the panel chairman said, “Actually, we received the documents at 5:00 p.m. yesterday (Thursday) at our party’s national headquarters, Abuja, and as we all know we have to go to Osun. . .
“It wasn’t our fault that we didn’t come here sooner. I want our people to know that I was not kidnapped by anyone. Nobody kidnapped us.
“We are here to do a very good job and we hope to get the necessary support from every member of the party. Osun is peaceful and we are confident that the Omoluabi ethic for which the state is known will be displayed throughout the conduct of the exercise.
“We are going to be transparent, fair and open to ensure that the whole process is free, fair, credible and acceptable to all.
“We have the congressional committee list with us and this is the list the party gave us. They are the ones we will be working with. Each local government has a congress committee set up by the party. It is impossible for us to visit all local government departments, but we will do our best. We are here to give you a good job. We can assure the people of the States that they will get the best in terms of support for a successful Congress. We will be transparent enough to finalize the congress tomorrow, ”Elegbeleye added.
Also speaking, interim state party chairman Prince Gboyega Famodun pledged committee members adequate support, saying every effort would be made to ensure a smooth process.
“As recommended by the National Secretariat, we adopted the paths of consensus in Osun for the purpose of the proper functioning of the party. Things have been done well. Our homework was well done. Our fathers and leaders examined the 332 parishes that we have in Osun. We have completed the exercise which will lead us to a very good convention tomorrow. The state government provided adequate security throughout the state. We are in love with peace ”, declared the president of the party.
The other speakers are Senator representing Osun Central, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Bashir; the former deputy governors of Osun, Ms. Titi Laoye-Ponle; Otunba Iyiola Omisore; and Prince Adeleke Adewoyin. They all praised the party leadership for adopting the consensus arrangement for Congress.
