Harsh Mahajan, Acting Chairman of Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee, Joins BJP | News from Shimla

SHIMLA: In a major setback for the Congress party in Himachal Pradesh, its incumbent chairman Harsh Mahajan, who is also a former minister and a close loyalist of late former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, joined the Bharatiya on Wednesday Janata Party (BJP).
He joined the saffron fold in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Party General Secretary Vinod Tawade in New Delhi.

Mahajan, who had also remained Virbhadra Singh’s political adviser, after joining the BJP, said, “Congress is led by ‘Maa-Beta’ (mother and son) at national and state level.”

He said the government led by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur in Himachal Pradesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave honest government and inspired by this Mahajan decided to leave Congress to join the BJP.

He said Himachal Pradesh like Uttrakhand was going to script a new history of government repeat.
“There was a conception that the government would change after five years, but the people of Uttrakhand changed that concept by repeating the BJP government,” he added.
Goyal said that in the next few days the people of Himachal Pradesh will again elect the BJP government with a huge majority.
Mahajan said he started his political career through NSUI and remained as state chairman of the Youth Congress for the longest term of 10 years.
He said he never lost an election and remained a minister and parliamentary secretary.
“Until the time when Virbhadra Singh was alive, Congress existed a bit in Himachal Pradesh, but after his demise, Congress no longer exists in the state,” he added.
He said: “Today the Congress Party is a party without direction and without a leader. It has no vision or leader and it lacks even grassroots workers”.
“As the Congress is run by ‘Maa-Beta’ at the national level, so is Himachal Pradesh where the ‘Maa-Beta’ run the party. A section of the Congress leadership deals with the sale of party tickets. I stayed at the helm of the business and seeing all this, I felt hurt,” he added.
He said, “The Congress would not win the Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh because people believe in the program and policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP will repeat the government in Himachal Pradesh.”
Son of former Himachal Pradesh assembly speaker, Harsh Mahajan, is a former three-time Chamba MP. He had been associated with the Congress party since 1972.
He was the prominent face of the Congress party in Chamba from where he won the Assembly elections in 1993, 1998 and 2003. From 2003 to 2008 he served as a State Cabinet Minister.
He had also remained chairman of the state youth congress from 1986 to 1995. His father Des Raj Mahajan had remained chairman of the assembly for 10 years and minister for 12 years.
In the past 19 years, Harsh Mahajan has however not contested any election to the assembly but he has remained very active in electoral politics playing a key role in every election as he is considered an electoral strategist and a key election manager.
In the 2017 assembly elections, he oversaw the election of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh in the assembly constituency of Arki.
On 26th April the All India Congress Committee (AICC) appointed four presidents active in Himachal Pradesh, of whom now only two, Rajender Rana and Vinay Kumar, are with the party while Harsh Mahajan and Pawan Kajal have joined the BJP.
