Emirates News Agency – Abu Dhabi to host first International Congress of Arabic Publishing and Creative Industries

ABU DHABI, 20th May, 2022 (WAM) — The first International Arabic Publishing and Creative Industries Congress will take place on 22nd May, 2020 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).

Organized by the Arabic Language Center Abu Dhabi (ALC), part of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi), the event is part of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. Dhabi (ADIBF 2022), which will take place from May 23 to 29 at the same location.

The Congress will bring together 300 experts from around the world representing global companies such as Disney+, TikTok, The World Bank, Rakuten Kobo and The New York Times to discuss how the publishing industry can evolve to drive content growth Arab.

Highlights of the congress will include special guest speakers including Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, President of the International Publishers Association (IPA); Nicholas Carr, Pulitzer Prize finalist; Michael Tamblyn, New York Times bestselling author, CEO of Rakuten Kobo; and Ann Hiatt, best-selling author and Silicon Valley veteran.

Another highlight will be a panel discussion titled “Arabic Media Crossover: Adapting Books into Audio, Film, and Games” with Hollywood screenwriter and podcast host Todd Gallicano; Maha Abdullah, MENA localization consultant for Disney+ streaming services; and Jonathan Knight, Managing Director of Games at The New York Times Moderated by Michael Garin, Managing Director of the Creative Media Authority, the session will explore how the regional publishing industry can maximize original Arabic content while maintaining cultural distinctiveness, as video streaming becomes the primary source of content for users worldwide.

The Congress will feature other expert-led panels and discussions featuring leading publishers, content creators and creative industries professionals. These include “Is social media the new book market?” which will explore the role social platforms play in increasing book sales and the impact of booktubers and social media influencers. Hosted by Publishers’ Weekly editor Ed Nawotka, the event will feature Saudi bookseller Sami Al Batati; Joelle Yazbeck, Head of MENA Partners for Twitter; and Annie Arsane, regional head of platform strategy at TikTok.

Another panel, “Education and Publishing in the Virtual World,” explores the links between education and technology and whether open access publishing is becoming a reality. The session will be moderated by Hanada Taha Thomure, Endowed Professor of Arabic Language at Zayed University, and will feature Al Kingsley, CEO of EdtTch NetSupport; Cristobal Cobo, Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank; John Russell, director of education for Alef Education; and Bissan Korban, Head of Products and Services at Pearson Education.

The Congress will end with a special session on the theme “What future for Arabic content on the Internet? watch how high-quality Arabic content can be nurtured in cyberspace. Nafez Dakkak, an EdTech industry expert who focuses on discovering new solutions that improve education systems, will be joined by Abdulsalam Haykal, Founder and Executive Chairman of Majarra.
