Congress slams BJP for calling Nehru grandfather of partition
Congress on Saturday criticized the BJP for running front-page advertisements in a few vernacular dailies in Karnataka, calling first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru the grandfather of the partition of India.
As Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra” (United March of India) entered Karnataka on the second day, the BJP state unit published an advertisement in some Kannada newspapers which read, “The rear- grandson unite what the ‘grandfather of the partition of India’ did?” With a map of India and Pakistan and Bangladesh divided amidst photographs of Nehru and the founder Pakistani Mohammed Ali Jinnah on either side, the black-painted advertisement asks the question: “Is the unity of India possible from a party that has caused the bloodbath of citizens to come to power? The BJP has alleged that the agenda of ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is to disintegrate India.
Congress has strongly opposed this accusation, saying the right has always been on the wrong side of history.
“The BJP gave the announcement. Right-wing ideology has always been on the wrong side of history. Since they couldn’t write history, they are trying to rewrite history,” Congress Media and Publicity Chairman Pawan Khera told reporters.
He alleged that the two-nation theory was first mooted by the Hindu Maha Sabha at its Ahmedabad convention in 1937, which was chaired by Hindutva ideologue Savarkar.
In 1942, Pakistan’s founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah repeated the same at the Lahore convention of the Muslim League, the Congress leader said.
In 1942, when the Congress quit all provincial governments in protest and to join the Quit India movement, the Sabha allied itself with the Muslim League in three provincial assemblies – West Bengal, NWFP and Sindh where the first resolution for Pakistan was past, Khera said.
“I challenge them (right-wing) that they were in alliance with the Muslim League and they did not stop it. It is clear who divided India. They (BJP) are talking to a person whose great -mother divided Pakistan. They (the BJP) don’t know the history before 1947 and 1971. They don’t know their own history,” Khera charged.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who was present there, said the BJP teaches history to those who brought independence.
“Which party united all the provinces and made one nation? It’s Congress. Which leader of the RSS took part in the struggle for freedom? Did the founder of the RSS Keshav Baliram Hedgewar or the second Sarsangh Chalak Madhav Sadashivrao Golwalkar take part in the struggle for freedom? Someone from RSS died in the fight for freedom? Now these people are taking history lessons for Congress,” Siddaramaiah charged.
“Nehru was in prison for nine years. Did he go to jail like Amit Shah? Siddaramaiah loaded.
